About Graduates of the Year Awards
The Graduates of the Year Awards (GOTYAs) is the DIA’s flagship program first introduced in 2003 for emerging designers, and created to support and celebrate exceptional Australian designers as they embark on their careers.
Tertiary institutions are invited to nominate their top graduates in either of two qualification levels Higher Education and Vocational in any one of three categories — Use, Interact and Place. These categories align with the ABS ANZSCO designer profile subcategories 2323, 2324 and 2325 and the seventeen other design disciplines, specialisations and alternative titles that line up under them.
Nominee portfolios are anonymously evaluated on their design excellence based on a transparent judging process and criteria. Finalists are interviewed by a panel of judges to determine their design skills and readiness for employment within the Australian design industry.
GOTYA winners receive recognition from the design community, mentorship, prizes, and connections with potential employers. This program provides valuable real-world feedback from experienced designers to both graduates and tertiary institutions.
Australian tertiary institutes that are DIA members and are registered training organisations or registered higher education providers are invited to nominate. Nominations are open to graduates who have completed their formal studies in 2023 in a full time or full-time equivalent undergraduate and honours tertiary course.
The information pack can be downloaded from here.
Categories
The GOTYAs program previously judged vocational and higher education graduates together in eight categories. Last year, feedback from educators led to the introduction of two entry levels - Higher Education (AQF 7+) and Vocational (AQF 5 & 6).
Additionally, the number of categories was reduced to three - Place, Use and Interact aligning with ABS ANZSCO designer profiles (sub categories) and addressing the diversity of design qualifications. This diversity has been a trend, with numerous traditional disciplines existing alongside or morphing into newer design fields.
The update aims to provide a more comprehensive and accurate representation of the diverse design fields, highlights the trends towards
multidisciplinary thinking and aligns with the Designers Australia Awards. The DIA's Accredited Designer program, relevant to most design graduates' career progression, utilises both the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) and the ABS ANZSCO designer profiles as foundational references.
The entry fee is $150 + GST per nomination. Registered Entity Membership is a criteria of entry. Educators can nominate up to six graduates per level per category.
