Award of Merit:
Walter Brooke for ARUP Workplace Adelaide
Walter Brooke is a studio of talented and experienced design professionals who expertly create extraordinary spaces for living, working, learning, and playing. From homes to businesses and large public structures, Walter Brooke, a leading Adelaide architect, has been creating refreshing and delightful spaces for almost 50 years. For the ARUP workplace project, we collaborated with ARUP, who were both clients and engineers. This relationship ensured that the project always prioritized well-being and sustainability, drawing upon global best practices.
About the Project
The team’s commitment to a better world was at the core of the project, creating a space that promotes health, well-being, and sustainability. The Arup workplace aims for Living Building Certification, focusing on reducing materials, promoting reuse, biophilic design, and eliminating toxins. Our challenge was to reuse as much as possible of the existing, outdated fit-out while ensuring that the outcome was cohesive and did not appear as a jumbled collection of elements. Our approach analysed salvageable items, avoided those nearing the end of their life, and considered options such as refinishing or distributing for recycling.
