Award of Merit:
Breville for 'an Aboriginal Culinary Journey' by Breville
Breville turns 90 this year. Originally making quality Radio’s until the 1950’s they turned towards kitchen appliances. The 1974 Jaffle sandwich maker established Breville as a design and innovation led business investing heavily on research and development and now a successful global leader in kitchen appliances selling in over 70 countries.
Since the early 2000’s the product development team has grown from just a handful to over 200 - employing in-house designers, engineers in mechanical, hardware and software disciplines, alongside culinary experts, research team through to scientists and mathematicians. Geographical and cultural backgrounds are diverse and work across 3 continents.
Today Breville is rated Australia’s 3rd most innovative establishment with 1000’s of Patents and Design Registrations and has gained over 150 global design awards. Breville plays a role in advocacy for design in a few areas.
Inviting Interns to be a part of active projects whist studying.
Creating external projects for education – for example setting a semester project with UTS - guiding students. Running internship competitions. For example, Sarah Jennings, Design Lead on the “Aboriginal Culinary Journey” project, was a winner and stayed with us (Now in her 4th Year at Breville)
Public Presentations. For example, recently using real project case studies to explain the journey of product development (e.g., “Stories behind the products” – UNSW lectures)
Our community and professional contributions include reaching out to the indigenous community – exemplied by this Aboriginal Culinary Journey Project, supporting universities, and working with various charity organisations.
Breville runs an internal program for continuing professional development using techniques such as Matrix working structure. Internal and external education programs are on offer as well as wellness programs. A level system to identify opportunities for development and to constantly keep track of team member’s careers pathway.
In respect to self-educated learning and evidence of human-centered design – Breville strongly encourages autonomous teams: encouraged to discover, delve deep into a topic, fail early and often to find the best solution. Research and user testing is done through extensive qualitative and quantitative exercises from in-home ethnographic studies to in-depth insight studies.
