DNJ Paper
DNJ Paper is a Melbourne-based research project and label led by designers Daphne Mohajer va Pesaran and Jake Nakashima-Edwards. They create paper clothing, accessories and objects using traditional and nontraditional techniques. Their work addresses social, aesthetic and conceptual questions in fashion and textile design.
DNJ Paper use self-produced handmade recycled rag paper, and handmade Japanese paper, known as washi, sourced from small studios located throughout Japan. Each sheet comes with comprehensive information on the conditions of its production.
Their pieces are designed to evolve over time, embracing wear, repair and decay. Wherever possible, they reduce, reuse, regenerate and recycle.
Project: MPavilion 10 Uniform
MPavilion annually engages an architect to design a pavilion for a summer festival of free public events. Japanese architect Tadao Ando designed MPavilion 10, and DNJ Paper created the front-of-house staff uniforms.
Complementing the pavilion’s unique design and materiality, DNJ Paper developed a cardamon-green linen jacket and a pink paper vest, inspired by samue and kamiko, a Japanese-style work coat, and traditional paper clothing respectively.
The fine linen complements the smooth concrete of MPavilion 10 while the wrinkled, waxed paper adds texture. The uniform design is lightweight, durable, low waste, and evolves over time, contrasting MPavilion 10’s rigid, unchanging nature.
